Living Costs in China

A realistic budget must include more than tuition and hostel. Costs vary substantially by city, campus, lifestyle and exchange rate.

Accommodation

University room type, campus, deposit, utilities and vacation-period rules.

Food

Campus dining, groceries, dietary needs and occasional off-campus meals.

Local transport

Metro, bus, bicycle, taxi and travel between campuses or hospitals.

Health and insurance

Required insurance, medical checks, medicines and uncovered treatment.

Residence and administration

Permit-related, document, photography and translation costs.

Travel and emergencies

Flights, baggage, local SIM, winter clothing and contingency funds.

Build a safer budget

  1. Use the university’s official annual fee notice as the base.
  2. Calculate first-year and later-year costs separately.
  3. Add at least one return flight and initial setup expenses.
  4. Allow for exchange-rate movement and fee revisions.
  5. Keep an emergency reserve that is not committed to tuition.
